Vuillard, whose career spanned the late 19th - mid 20th century, was an important post-impressionist French painter who was part of the Les Nabis movement which was instrumental in laying foundation for abstraction. His art became more vibrant and abstracted, which some art historians conclude it may be related to the Fauves.
Figures in interiors, such as the print in our collection, are a common theme in Vuillard’s work, along with landscapes and portraiture. He experimented with many disciplines including ceramics, photography, drawing, and printmaking.
