Howard Schleeter was born in 1903 and raised in Buffalo New York where he studied art briefly at the Albright Art School. He moved to New Mexico in 1929 and lived there until his death in 1976. He worked primarily in the modernist tradition although he did some realistic depictions of the West when he worked as a muralist for the Works Progress Administration.
