Essentially a self taught artist, other than a few drawing classes at the Arts Students League in New York City, Knee, maiden name Schnaufer, came from a wealthy family. Social constraints made most pursuits, outside of marriage and children, impossible for most women. She followed the expected path of marrying and setting about with entertainment and amusements. She abruptly left the marriage after 10 years, then she divorced, which was shocking to 1930’s society.
